Sleep deprivation suppresses many aspects of our immune system.

According to the Dutch Association for Sleep and Wake Research (NSWO), more than 40% of the Dutch population feels they do not get enough sleep. More than half are tired upon waking, and 15% are even very tired.

What are natural killer cells?

Natural killer cells form an important part of the immune system in our tissues and blood. They can detect and break down virus-infected or malignant transformed cells. This is an important mechanism, especially in the current climate.

Why is sleep so important, then?

These Natural Killer cells are important as the first line of defense against disease. One night of 3.3 hours of sleep, compared to 6.5 hours of sleep, led to a halving of NK cell activity. After a night of catch-up sleep of 7.2 hours, Natural Killer cell activity was back to normal levels. Do you want to strengthen and maximally support your immune system? Then ensure you get enough sleep in addition to good nutrition and exercise! Sleep is the best medicine.
