If losing weight just isn't working and you have a BMI above 40, you might be tempted to opt for gastric bypass surgery.
Men spreekt dan over morbide obesitas.
What are the surgical stomach reductions?
- Gastric reduction using a gastric band or gastric tube. A procedure in which the stomach is reduced in size by means of a band around the stomach.
- The stomach bypass called Gastric Bypass. A procedure in which the majority of the stomach, the duodenum, and a portion of the small intestine are separated from digestion.
The pros and cons of gastric reduction surgery
The greatest benefit is, of course, the weight loss, which can amount to up to 50% of current weight. This can have health effects. Moving becomes easier and the risk of chronic diseases decreases.
However, there are also many disadvantages.
- Risk of dumping syndrome (nausea caused by overeating)
- Risk of bleeding, leakage, stomach ulcer, gallstones and kidney stones
- Risk of gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, abdominal cramps, and bloating.
- You can no longer eat certain foods
- Risk of hypoglycemia, this means blood sugar that is too low more often
- Risk of developing lactose intolerance
- Vitamin deficiencies (causing hair loss, fatigue, or other symptoms)
- A lot of excess skin because she lost a lot of weight quickly
- Postpone the desire to become pregnant until 1 or 2 years after the surgery.
