The numbers don't lie.

The RIVM has compiled a list of vulnerable groups at higher risk of developing severe symptoms from the coronavirus. This includes people who are severely overweight. One in three coronavirus patients admitted to the ICU is overweight. You are considered severely overweight if your BMI is above 30. If your BMI is between 25 and 30, you are overweight. In the Netherlands, over 50% of the population is overweight to severely overweight. Time for action!

Being overweight leads to increased health risks

People who are overweight are at higher risk of metabolic diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. As a result, their immune system is severely weakened, and the consequences of contracting coronavirus can be serious, if not fatal. It is not the case that you automatically have a higher risk of a severe case of the virus, but the chances do increase. There is only one way to reduce these chances and risks, and that is to ensure your body fat percentage goes down. In other words, lose weight.

Make a meal plan and seek help

It is all about the energy balance. Eating less and healthier, and exercising more are the ways to achieve a lower body weight and thus a lower BMI. You can, of course, do a lot yourself; however, it has been proven that not many people achieve sustainable weight loss through self-help. Creating a meal plan can help you get an overview of what is going well and what could be improved.
Here is how to make a meal plan:

  • How am I going to adjust my diet?
  • When do I start?
  • What is my goal?
  • Am I going to do this with family members or a friend?
  • Seek help from a weight consultant

For the first question: How am I going to adjust my diet, we have the following tips:

  • Opt for small adjustments to your diet.
  • Reduce portion sizes: eat slightly less meat, bread, potatoes, rice, or pasta.
  • Try to snack less, and have fruit or vegetables more often between meals.
  • Compare the amount of calories, fat, protein, and carbohydrates on labels.
  • Choose whole-grain products for a fuller feeling.
  • Spread a thin layer of margarine on your slice of bread.
  • Don't step on the scale every day, but choose a fixed time of the week.
  • Reward yourself when things go well; that motivates you to continue.
  • Make an appointment with the weight consultant to encourage sticking with it.
