Knowing but not doing
If our nutrition coach shows a client an apple in one hand and a chocolate bar in the other and asks which is the healthiest choice, everyone points to the apple. If you sit a lot, you know too that exercise is important. So that is the point. Everyone knows it. The challenge, therefore, is often not in knowing, but in the behavior of actually choosing the healthiest option more often. The whirlwind of the day dictates the choices. One hour of coaching at our center does not ensure that you make the right choices forever. More is needed for that: namely, motivation, time, repetition, and sometimes necessity, willpower, and trust. Learning desired behavior and making the desired choices mainly involves committing to it in the hours between coaching sessions. And there are quite a few of those.
Benefits of a personal coach
Over the past year, we have strongly felt the power of personal coaching. For quite some time, there was no room for group coaching, and people sought help from the personal trainers and weight consultants at First Class Fitness Delft for outdoor training and online coaching. This one-on-one coaching has delivered remarkable results. Personal attention is truly a game changer when it comes to adopting and maintaining healthier behavior.
The right motivation for results
The word motivation has several meanings. Motivation can come from within yourself, but also from external triggers. For example, from necessity or the wish of another person. These are known as intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation works best because you find it important to exercise from within yourself. Then you also stick to the goal more easily, and that acts as an incentive to keep going.
Tips for more intrinsic motivation
- Describe the goal you would like to achieve.
- Choose a sport you enjoy so that you look forward to it.
- Create a plan with a clear step-by-step guide.
- Make sure you exercise in an environment that is familiar and pleasant.
- Choose a workout buddy you get along well with.
- Cozy seating area (for coffee and tea before/after the training sessions)
- Eat a nutritious snack an hour before exercising.
Overcome obstacles
No matter how motivated you are, in practice, things always happen that get in the way. Be prepared for that. Annoying events like getting sick or stress, but also a vacation or a party, can cause you to lose motivation to exercise for a while. No problem. You have made a schedule and the workout times are back in your calendar. This way, you pick up your resolution again, and your motivation will naturally increase.
