Often, you don't need to make things more complicated than they are. Listening to your mother and your grandmother already provides enough insight to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Yet, it is not all that simple. We don't always look for the easiest path, and often not the cheapest one either. That is why I have written a blog with tips that you surely still remember from your grandmother, your oldest sister, an aunt, and certainly from your mother. Some, of course, with a wink.

‘'Go play outside!'’

The temptation to sit inside and lounge in front of the TV is great, even if you have already been working indoors all day. After all, there is a wide variety of TV programs you can watch at times that suit you. Binge-watching is the common term for watching series for several hours straight. As a result, the temptation to stay seated is very strong. Therefore, playing outside means that, even now, a top piece of advice is to go outside instead of sitting in front of the TV. Walking, but also playing a game of football, tennis, or tag, is still great fun for adults too.

‘'Clean up your room!'’

A tidy environment leads to a tidy mind. A tidy mind ensures that you maintain healthy behavior better. So, it is a sum of beneficial influences. It starts with an organized work environment. Make sure your desk stays clear. Throw away what you don't need and put away what is finished. By making to-do lists and scheduling these tasks, you gain more structure and actually get around to tasks. You can do the same with your household. Set fixed times for fixed tasks and put your things in designated places. That way, you lose things less often and it looks more organized.

‘'Wash your hands!'’

Did you know that the Dutch always washed their hands the least? Washing, because that is a thing of the past since the pandemic. The Dutch are now washing their hands more often too, and that is better for your health as well. There are fewer bacterial infections. So, for health benefits, wash your hands often, and not just after using the toilet.

‘Go to bed on time!’

A good night's sleep is good for your health. The number of hours a person needs per night can vary between 6 and 9 hours. You can work on getting a good night's sleep yourself by moderating your alcohol consumption and using a bedtime ritual. Try to go to bed at the same time every night with the same routines as brushing your teeth, showering, etc. Make sure your room is dark and do not use your phone, laptop, or TV in your bedroom.

‘Finish your plate!’

The advice to finish everything on your plate is one you shouldn't take too literally. Eating against your will is not conducive to your relationship with food. This saying from your mother is, of course, meant so you don't leave the table hungry and start snacking. That is also the reason we attach to it. By eating well and a varied diet three times a day at set times, you stay ahead of hunger. This prevents you from snacking and making poor choices.

‘Watch out that you don't fall!

Prevention is better than cure. Your mother often warned you about all sorts of things. Watch out, be careful…. To prevent injuries, for example while playing sports, it is a matter of good preparation and building up gradually. We use our bones, muscles, tendons, and joints to play sports and move. We also call this the 'musculoskeletal system'. When you exercise regularly, your musculoskeletal system becomes stronger. Bones and tendons become firmer, muscles thicken, and your joints become more flexible. Sometimes things can go wrong. A muscle stretches too far, a joint twists in the wrong direction, a tendon tears, or you even break a bone. We call these sports injuries. You can prevent sports injuries by working with a training schedule. Gradual build-up, a proper warm-up, and a cool-down afterwards ensure the prevention of sports injuries.
